It is for sure that reducing the Mother Tongue weighting in PSLEs will have its repercussions. However, to what extent does the repercussions matter? Students will become stronger in their other subjects, concentrating more on their Sciences, Mathematics and English. These three subjects, in the world we live in today, are needed in all of the "higher-paying" jobs, as well as those that have any substancial impact in the world's economy, not only Singapore's. It has been mentioned that China is a fast-growing country, and its economy is booming. However, it does not show any signs of Chinese replacing English as the Universal Language. Maintaining the Mother Tongue subject would therefore only maintain our heritage, that our forefathers spoke their Mother Tongue. Our Malay and Indian friends also speak their native language at home, and use Singlish as the mode when conversing light-heartedly. When students get out of the classroom, Singlish always takes over, and their grades remain the same, be it positive or negative already. However, the Mother Tongue subject's weighting goes hand-in-hand with its teachers' importance. We have recognised that few major schools offer Music as a graded subject in "O" Levels. These few schools have only a handful of Music teachers, and the schools that do not offer it have even fewer. If Mother Tongue becomes less important, the importance of maintaining it as a graded subject would also be reduced, it only comes in time. Therefore, Mother Tongue should be maintained. After all, putting a little more exam-stress on children is good. Students should learn to handle the things in life that come their way. Reducing the subject's importance would also mean reducing the teachers' importance. After all, our beloved teachers still need their jobs. Primary school already has too few subjects to educate our juniors.
