AF1002 Group 3 Times & Nonsense. | |
Sunday, June 6, 2010
5th June was World Environment Day. This event is hosted annually by a different city each year so that more people would understand how important biodiversity is and how the loss in plant and animal species affects human beings. This year, beach clean-ups, concerts, exhibits, film festivals and community events are organised worldwide to commemorate this event. Human activities have caused a loss in plant and animal species. One such activity is deforestation. It is caused by an increase in demand for agricultural land use, growth of settlements, improved transport networks, growth of industries and forest fires. This reduces the biodiversity of a forest as plants would be killed and animals would lose their habitats. As a result, smaller animals would fall prey to larger animals. Thus, causing them to become extinct. Another activity is excessive fishing in waters. Uneducated fishermen do not know the harm of overfishing. Thus, they continue to fish in large amounts. This causes the number of fishes to decrease rapidly. Physical activities have also caused a loss in plant and animal species. One activity is global warming. Global warming is caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases which results from fossil fuel burning and deforestation. It causes ice bergs to melt, sea levels to rise and changes the amount and pattern of precipitation. In conclusion, both human and physical activities cause a loss in plant and animal species. To reduce extinction of biodiversity, human and physical activities that cause the loss in plant and animal species should be reduced. - SASHA
