The 19th FIFA World Cup held in South Africa was indeed awesome. World Cup fan were crazed by the football match that held only once every four years. Many of us may not realize that this event eventually affects the office productivity. Nothing shocking if football fans watch every single World Cup matches. However, some matches occur during office hours, and this is the main reason why it affects the office productivity in many countries. Some of the employees will even take fake medical leave just to catch the matches on time. In addition, the results for the match affects them emotionally too. Good result for their supported country means positive influence to them emotionally and this may lead to a better performance in work, and vice versa. The employer will thus get pathetic office productivity if things do not turn up well. No doubt that those employers themselves were being affected by the World Cup. It will be better if employers plan in advance on how to counteract on this issue. For example, push their employees to hit beyond their sales target quota before the month of World Cup, so as to prepare their company for the worse. This would be considered a more pessimistic way to solve the problem. Alternatively, granting employees with a few unpaid leave that they would like to take to watch the World Cup, and allowing leave for 2 to 3 employees on the same day. This would help to avoid having low manpower on certain days. World Cup maybe an exciting event where many of us look forward to. In turns of office productivity, employers will sure be the one who have to face unavoidable adverse effect that World Cup brings to them. Some football fans were even willing to quit their job just to watch the matches, and this shows the passion they have in World Cup, that every employers have to overcome with.
